As founder and editor of LUXE City Guides, Grant Thatcher is in the business of helping people save time. A former actor, the Briton launched LUXE in Hong Kong in 2002 after years compiling and sharing his own list of great finds around Asia. It has also launched Little LUXE, a guide to "going glam with the fam", with its first edition dedicated to Hong Kong.
That means Thatcher is kept busy, dealing with issues in the office and on the road. Each guide takes six to nine months to create, with Thatcher and his Hong Kong team involved in every step of the process. "When travelling for work, it really is work, up to 14-hour days for two weeks at a time and upwards of 40 meetings and site inspections per day," he says. "It's almost impossible for me to travel to a city that we have a guide for and not immediately start walking itineraries and checking on new openings."
While he bemoans the mechanics of travel today - from the endless packing and unpacking to cumbersome security searches - Thatcher is still enamoured with its sense of adventure and possibility.
"You can take years and never really know a city, or it can take just a heartbeat and you feel you've come home. The important thing is to be open to any adventure and go for it. Visiting Sweden, I learned from a food specialist that something as simple as tasting a city's bread and water is a great place to start understanding and really experiencing each city. It's pretty much the basis of everything," he says.

"One of my favourite things to do is find a spot and sit down and just watch and listen. It becomes fascinating as you discover each city has its own speed, smell and resonance. I've been a gardener since the age of five and count myself very lucky to have a garden in Hong Kong, but I manage to find time for cooking, writing, hiking, graphic design, decor, fashion, swimming and 16th- to early 18th-century British architecture. I'm also rather fond of Campari."
