The build up was intense. Months of teasers and speculation to see what new CEO of TechnoMarine Vincent Perriard would do to the brand that desperately needed a refresh. At the same time, Perriard only had a few months because he was new to the brand - fresh out of his seat at Concord. His task was to release new watches for Baselworld 2010 to be interesting enough for people to notice the brand again. Not an easy task, especially given the molasses like pace of the watch industry. The middle of March was the proving ground - would the new collection have enough appeal to convince enough people the brand was worth paying attention to again.

In the 1990s TechnoMarine was a big deal because it was another "mold breaking" brand. I've discussed this before, but I will again because I think it is important. TechnoMarine opened the doors to modern luxury sport watches. Not that they themselves were super high-end, but the brand revolutionized the concept of who wears sport watches, and when they can be worn. Mixing plastic with diamonds was an odd thing back then. In fact, for most people it still is. But the concept worked.

The watches looked like blinged-out Casio G-Shock watches with analog hands, and they worked. The industry stole the concept to a degree and overshadowed TechnoMarine a few years later with lots more, much expensive or unique pieces. To a large degree, I think you can credit TechnoMarine with making it acceptable to offer (and buy), the legions of gold watches with rubber and/or diamonds. Plastic was simply an interim material, making way for all sorts of exotic sporty materials that you'd never traditionally think of pairing with luxury watches.

Sometime last year this new watch brand was born in France, with a decidedly American sounding name. Patton currently makes three watch models - each a variation of the P42 design. Each are diver style watches, and one is a chronograph model. I would like to focus on the more hardcore model of the trio, which the Patton P42 Hyperbare - based on "hyperbaric chamber" (pressure chamber). The watch is filled with a formula of mineral oil that cannot really be condensed very much, creating space that is more or less immune to high pressure. www.rep8.com/replica-omega-c-141.html The alternative is a case filled with air, or some type of gas. Oil filled watches are not common, but not unheard of. The Patton P42 Hyperbare isn't the only one around by any means, but might be one of the nicest ones. These are pretty watches, given their French design.

Mineral oil benefits from being non conductive. Meaning that the Swiss quartz movement in the watch won't be affected by the oil because it won't short it out. The entire case is literally filled with the oil, and there is a little bubble that moves around the case. This small amount of air is necessary for when the liquid expands a bit at times. The hands move freely through the liquid, and because the watch dial is filled with the stuff, it looks sort of eerily flat -in a cool way... What I don't understand is why with the liquid filling the watch is only resistant to 1000 meters. Not that 1000 meters is shallow, but I have plenty of 1000 meter dive watches that don't have the oil. Plus, other oil filled watches (such as those from Sinn) are water resistant to much greater depths. However, Patton makes clear (via its many "endurance tests") that the P42 Hyperbare isn't just water resistant to 1000 meters, but also is able to withstand that pressure for long periods of time.

You can't have an oil filled mechanical watch - at least no that I know of. So you are stuck with quartz, which isn't so bad. It does make changing the battery a pain in the ass though. When the battery dies, you need to send the watch back to Patton. Though, Patton has thoughtfully included a 10 year lithium ion battery in the watch. So battery changes aren't gonna be that frequent.

Pretty wild right? This is the new version of the La Clef du Temps watch. From "La Clef" to "La Clé," funny enough they both mean "the key of time." The original La Clef du Temps was never originally meant to be an Hublot watch. It was designed for the Confrerie Horlogere under BNB Concept before it went bankrupt. www.watchgoing.com/rolex-c-63.html When Hublot bought up the Confrerie and Mathias Buttet, it got the La Clef du Temps with it. I wasn't really too enthused on that watch - writing about the La Clef du Temps here. I later learned that Mathias designed it with the Predator in mind, and the dial was meant to look like a brain.

Now the weird movement that is able to speed up and slow down time is back in a new watch called the La Cle du Temps - and it is part of the Hublot Confrerie (a division of exclusive, very high-end Hublot watches). It is in a brand new case to hold the movement (which is a reworked version of the one from a couple of years ago). The watch is now much more futuristic and feels more in line with the concept of the Hublot Confrerie.

If you aren't familiar with the movement in the La Cle du Temps, let me explain it. It starts with a tourbillon based movement, where the tourbillon juts out of the bottom side of the watch. This is called a vertically mounted tourbillon. You can see it in the picture looking like some space age propeller. The watch dial, to tell the time, is on the upper right of the dial. The lower left of the dial is a power reserve indicator (looks like 5 days worth in the manually wound movement), and above it is the selector for speeding up for slowing down the time. This is where it gets interesting, and Hublot has clearly changed the format of the dial a bit from the previous watch. Using a crown on the left of the watch you can alter the time to run fast or run slow. A fun, but gimmicky way of "controlling time." The neat part is that the movement always retains knowledge of the correct time - so you can always switch it back to "normal" mode and the time isn't all screwed up.

When is a watch like this useful? Honestly, I am not sure it ever is above and beyond appreciating the complexity of it all. In a sense, it is a metaphor about controlling time. The name of the watch itself is the "key of time."

In terms of technical details and specifics on the watch - little is known thus far. Hublot is keeping tight lipped on that until March 2011. What I do know is that there will be something special that helps the green parts of the watch glow. The rest of it will be in black, save for the polished base plate of the dial. Personally, I think the black dial with shark skin strap is rather attractive. To add some visual interest you’ll notice that the dial has some depth to it, giving it a more attractive look. Inside is a Swiss ETA 2824 automatic movement.
