When I first saw the scaly bracelet of this watch, I instantly thought about Aquaman, the orange scale shirted, underwater comic book (hero?) character who "speaks with fishes." IWC Aquatimer Watch Collection
IWC dive watch enthusiasts rejoiced to see a freshened up line of IWC Aquatimer watches released recently at SIHH 2009 in Geneva. There are a number of new models, and a slightly updated a depth gauge version as well (the Deep Two). IWC Replica Watch seemed to take a completely different approach this year as the line is much more colorful and shiny than it was previously. I am sure that the watches are mechanically and functionally superb, but I have mixed feelings on the new looks. Still the details are impressive, especially the use of sapphire crystals over the rotating bezels.
People associate professional instruments with IWC watches. The Aquatimer series was always for the serious enthusiast. The new line has models that almost look cartoony in some angles, and the sheer range of colors available seems to miss the point of why people chose IWC Aquatimer watches over competitor offerings. Looking at the large hands, and bight yellows, oranges, blues, and other colors, I kept thinking to myself where I had seen this before. All over Japanese dive watches of course. These looks are usually typified by watches in a much lower range, not the price points at which IWC prides itself ($5,000 plus). I can't say what type of success IWC will have with the new watches, and it is possible they will be a strong commercial success. Further, this commentary isn't solely in regard to the marketing images. You can see this in the video and other images of the watches. Decide for yourself the resulting looks of the new line.
There are also the redone metal bracelets. Still in titanium I believe, but plenty of steel versions as well. The Aquatimers used to have a very unique bracelet, and these new watch bracelets have a look that is much more mainstream. Did customers complain? Were the old bracelets no good? When I think about getting an IWC watch, I want something that stands out. For a few hundred bucks you can get a diving watch that has at least 70% of the looks of this new Aquatimer line. In my opinion, it should not be that way. Overall, I like most of what the new Aquatimer line has to offer, but I keep questioning if it is enough? Think about it, these are basically very high quality versions of a less mature look. Though perhaps during depressed economic times, IWC is simply turning to bright colors to heighten people's days.

The look doesn't exactly make them appear "high-market" but it is functional, and protects the metal underneath. The Tiffany & Co. Mark T-57 had some watches that also experimented with use of vulcanized rubber. There is also the new bracelet/strap quick change feature. A clip on the watch makes these elements modular and easy to change. I like this a lot as depending on your mood or need, a diving watch needs to have a different strap. This is a great functional addition to the Aquatimer line.

Longio 1000m Diving Tourbillon Watch
Remember the Chinese watch maker Longio? I talked about them here when discussing their first tourbillon watches. I applauded the Hong Kong based watch maker for having the courage to thrust itself in the tourbillon watch market that is dominated by European watch companies that have the process down pretty well. China's strength is in ingenuity and keeping costs low. The highly sought after tourbillon complication could be had from Longio at a fraction of what the European makers charge. Not that Chinese tourbillon watches are a replacement for the Europeans, but it is was certainly a knock on the door of the stalwart giants.
Now comes Longio's second tourbillon watch, the yet to be properly named 1000m Diving Tourbillon. Diver tourbillon watches aren't new, but this combination of 1000m water resistant case, sporty looks, and cost of about $8,000 simply cannot be found in any European watch for double, triple, or even quadruple the cost. In fact most European diving tourbillon watches cost north of $100,000. So while $8,000 sure isn't cheap, it is a bargain compared to the competition. As a special benefit to Longio, it is part of a company that produces many watch parts for German and Swiss watch makers. The only difference here is that it bears a name that is openly Chinese in origin.

Accuracy is also less that its European counterparts, but not by as much as you'd think. It took the Europeans how long to get a decent tourbillon movement into a watch? Decades probably. And in just a few years here is China with their own. China will never beat Europe when it comes to quality or refinement, but it will always beat them when it comes to speed - just a different mentality at work.
The $8,000 question (literally) is whether buyers are going to be taken enough by the watch to buy it. No one will argue that the watch is unattractive, as it clearly has its merits, and as 1000 meter diver it is at least made solidly. The tourbillon movement has always been about enjoyment in watching it operate. The question is whether enough people will be taken by the design plus the mechanics to appreciate it as a worthy alternative given the less expensive, but still expensive price. Longio's challenge will be to show customers what goes into the creation of each of its tourbillon watches. Chinese firms have always had a weak communication ability in terms of "speaking" to Western nations - so Longio will likely need to reach out to external sources to gets its messages across. Until then, you have this watch item of interest which should be available soon.

The newest Titanic DNA watch from Romain Jerome expressly indicates what it is, "Steampunk." Instead of just hinting at the idea and playing with the concept, this watch has "Steampunk" in the name, and fashions the watch as such. Granted, a lot of the steampunk appointments of the watch are for show only, it still looks pretty cool. The watch starts with an RJ 2 automatic tourbillon movement that has a very cool anchor shaped rotor. The movement is made by Concepto for Romain Jerome and is a new level of luxury being a tourbillon movement that is self-winding.
The Tourbillon Steampunk Ala Grande is 50mm wide with a case that is made of steel (rusted, satin finished, and polished), titanium, and rubber. The case makes rich use of rivets, 80 of them that are hand applied all over the bezel (meant to look like old-timey boiler room equipment), as well as the iconic six sided screws in the case that are attached to the polished steel "claws." In addition to steel, the claws are available in pink gold as well a black ceramic. The "Ala Grande" part of the name comes from the size of the watch, which at 50mm is big. It is even larger with the crown included in the measurement being 53mm wide. Really a serious statement on your wrist, but cool enough not to require some creepy Victorian outfit to go with it.

Romain Jerome Titanic DNA Chéca Is Melty Face Watch
I do applaud Romain Jerome for being so ballsy and avant garde. They have made some nice one-off or limited edition pieces that spit in the face of fellow Swiss who are highly conservative most of the time - especially in terms of watch design. Actually, even Romain Jerome's non limited edition watches are "special." Love them or hate them you have to appreciate their niche and determination to be different. However, that doesn't mean I have to love everything they make. This new special "art" watch by French artist André Chéca is a bit much for me. It is one of those things that I freely admit not liking, but appreciate the artistic endeavors behind it, and that it exists. As though I wouldn't get pissed about it being in a museum ("That isn't art, I could do that!"), but I would openly discuss my distaste for it ("My lord this piece tickles the vomit enticing regions of my gullet").
According to Chéca, the watch is meant to appear like the "tortured" pieces of metal that lay thousands of feet underwater being corroded and abused by the elements. This is how a lot of metal on ships tends to end up after that long submerged in salt water. The metal here is bronze - although I understand that little bronze was actually used on the titanic. Though bronze does have the quality of oxidizing - so this watch will look even more weather battered in a few years. This one-off watch is big at 72mm wide (with crown) and about 21mm thick. Really massive. The form of the watch resembles the other Romain Jerome Titanic-DNA timepieces, but does not look exactly like them. It is as though the standard line has been, well...melted. From the messed up looking crown, to the hands on the dial that look too sad to read, this watch will work. I have a feeling that it will share the other models' ETA 2892 automatic movement inside of the watch. The highly abused looked of the watch continues onto the strap and the clasp. None of it feels realistic - as though it was pulled out from the depths - hence the artistic component. The only smooth and clean looking element of the watch is the sapphire crystal that is perfectly round and clear. The water didn't touch that part!

Urwerk UR-CC1 King Cobra Linear Time Watch
Don't get too excited about this watch unless you have some mucho petty cash and want to battle for one of the 50 pieces in this limited edition (25 in either of two materials). While not as sexy in function as most Urwerk watches with their rotating satellites, this new UR-CC1 King Cobra takes an older concept and makes it new again with "linear time." The dial(s) of the watch show three pieces of information - the hours, minutes, and seconds. Flip the watch over and you see a more naked version of the hours and minutes laid out like two computer program progress gauges. "4 o'clock is currently at 73%" You get the idea. Much of the inspiration behind the Urwerk CC1 watch was another linear time watch design from 1958 that was made as a prototype fo Patek Philippe.
Not sure if that watch ever got made. It was a novel concept at the time - and honestly by today's standards is pretty ugly - even though it is in gold. See the image of it that Urwerk handed out. For over 10 years now Urwerk has been playing with the idea of doing a linear time watch. After three years of development the UR CC1 movement was done, and the result is pretty cool. The whole concept of linear time is pretty simple, must mastering it from a technical and visual perspective in a mechanical watch is a pain.

I love that Tag Heuer made this watch. I don't love that I can't afford it, but at least a few people can. Tag Heuer is hoping that 150 people bite. The first of 150 pieces of this new Tag Heuer Monaco V4 watch will be auctioned off at the Only Watch 2009 charity watch auction. The other 149 of them are up for grabs. Tag Heuer has been known to make interesting watch concepts that that are eye catching, but I don't know how often they ever actually made the watches. With the average price of a Tag Heuer watch retailing at probably $2,000 this is a major step up. I wonder watch is going on at LVMH (parent company) that made this possible.
You of course get that the "V4" name is meant to remind you of a car engine. So is the look of the movement as seen through the rear of the watch. The four turbine looking cylinders as the four corners of the movement are each the mainspring barrels. Together they hold 52 hours of power reserve for the watch. You'll notice that on the front and year of the watch there are a number of belts, just like in an engine. These transmission belts are cool to look at and replace many of the smaller gears that connect the larger gears. These are called pinions. The transmission belts are constructed in the same way as those in engines, just miniaturized. Meaning they still have a metal wire going through them for strength. And like those on engines, likely need to be replaced every... few 100,000 miles, or hours of operation in this instance (guessing on when they will need to be replaced, but you know they will be at some point).

Tag Heuer claims that the ball bearings have less friction that the rubies. You also have the linear weight that serves as to winder the automatic movement. Basically, as you move your hand the weight moves up and down (as opposed to oscillating in circles). It does not have a lot of travel room as you can see, but Tag Heuer says the system works quite well. What is also impressive is just how accurate the movement is. Tag Heuer says that the movement deviates by just plus or minus 4 seconds a day. Well within Chronometer range.
Each watch movement takes 165 hours of labor to hand assemble, and represent something special among the Tag Heuer line. From sub $1000 quartz watches up to this Tag Heuer Monaco v4 limited edition watch that retails for $80,000 (I have also seen indications that Tag Heuer my have raised the price to 100,000 Swiss Francs, at least in Europe).

Seiko Spring Drive Spacewalk Commemorative Edition Watch
Those cheeky bastards over at Seiko, how they tease me. Long after the Seiko Spring Drive Spacewalk watch is announced to be sold publicly, they finally do so, and the price is a whopping $28,000. OK, so lets go back a second. While this article is being written before the Antiquroum auction on September 24th when the Seiko Spring Drive Spacewalk watch that Richard Garriot wore in space is being sold-off - by the time you read this the auction will have occurred and we will know just how much the watch went for. I have no idea what the price will be, but I think it will be around what this new edition of the watch will cost retail. (UPDATE: price for the auctioned off was was $45,600).

It was originally meant to be in some limited edition that was at least more than the 6 that were made. Now, for whatever reason, Seiko will produce that larger volume of these coveted timepieces. Seiko says that they are making it because Richard Garriot urged them to. I have respect for the guy, but anyone who blows their fortune on traveling to space one time isn't exactly the type of business man I want to be taking advice from. More of an emotional acting person right? I think it has to do with the larger success of the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, and the fact that there has been so much public interest over the watch being auctioned by Antiquorum. I can't even recall now how long ago it was that I first learned of the Spring Drive Space walk watch - 2008, 2007? It was originally meant to be in some limited edition that was at least more than the 6 that were made. Now, for whatever reason, Seiko will produce that larger volume of these coveted timepieces. Seiko says that they are making it because Richard Garriot urged them to. I have respect for the guy, but anyone who blows their fortune on traveling to space one time isn't exactly the type of business man I want to be taking advice from. More of an emotional acting person right? I think it has to do with the larger success of the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, and the fact that there has been so much public interest over the watch being auctioned by Antiquorum. Gerald Genta Arena Metasonic Sonnerie Watch
Whoa there Gerald Genta (and I speak to the company, not the man - as he isn't part of the brand any more). What is going on here? Where did this come from? Last thing I expected from you was a highly sophisticated sonnerie watch. You say that you have been doing this for a while (making sonnerie watches), but the last one that you released was in the mid 1990s? I am confused. Ideally, if you want to feel really cool, you could drop almost $3.5 million bucks and get both of them. Looking at both of the masterful watches, I get the feeling that they share a lot in common. Both have off-centered watch faces, both attempt to delight you in their mechanical splendor by giving you large open dials with lots of almost pornographic views into the movement (front and rear!), and both just want to be loved and find a good home with you! While 30 Hybris Mechanica Grande Sonnerie watches will be around, the Gerald Genta Arena Metasonic limited edition will only have 10 pieces - each taking about a year to make.
The case is 46mm wide in titanium - but the watch hosts a bunch of metals. You see, Gerald Genta wanted the audio qualities of the watch to be perfect. So it studied metals, made a new one (Magsonic), and even created special software to test all of this out. The idea was to fully enhance the sound of the sonnerie functions, without altering what they sound like. The final result has the watch in (the said titanium), steel, a bronze alloy, a white gold allow, and Magsonic. One thing of interest is that this watch may be the first Grande Sonnerie watch that is water resistant. See if any of your beloved Patek Philippe minute repeaters can boast that!
In addition to that, the sound from the Arena Metasonic is supposed to be amazing. Using that software they made, they really did their homework in trying to make the watch perfect. I love the effort they put into this stuff. It is like collective knowledge to perfect the industry we love, an industry that theoretically doesn't need to exist, but I love that it does. It is a few steps above the concept of someone having a PhD in the Klingon language, only here is it expertise in what metals to use when trying to make a watch sing its best! I just love it.

Maybe it is a coincidence that titanium was mostly used for the watch exterior, as the material is so popular these days. Gerald Genta seems to suggest the metal absorbs less sound than steel. If you notice that on the case, the screws are mostly on the outside, I think this is also part of that effort to not have sound be absorbed by the case. Michael Bittel Double Diaphragm Eclipse Watch
This watch doesn't just have a dial that looks like a camera shutter, the prototype version actually used a camera shutter. Anyhow, the Double Diaphragm Eclipse is pretty nifty, and you can tell how it is much like other Michael Bittel watches. He uses adjustable blinds on the dials to alter the images. This watch is similar in theme. Bittel says it has about three dials. This is true. Remember how I said it has a opening and closing shutter for the dial? Well it actually has two of them. Notice the gold and silver tone ones in the dial. You adjust one by moving the watch bezel, and likely the crown at 10 o'clock to adjust the other one. Underneath them, you see the manually-wound mechanical movement. On the partially decorated movement Michael Bittel will place diamonds (or perhaps other jewels) if you like. I see one advantage to this watch really. You get that look of a classic aviator with the Burberry name - if that tickles you the right way.
